“The only International Market of its kind in Africa – A meeting place for film & television industry professionals”

The 9th Sithengi Film & Television Market
16 – 19 November 2004
Artscape, Cape Town

We are gearing up for the 9th Sithengi Film & Television Market which takes place from the 16th to the 19th of November at the Artscape Theatre Complex in Cape Town.

Sithengi 2003 was a great success with 1415 delegates attending the market from 54 countries, a rise in the number of international delegates, an increase in the numbers of films submitted to the product market and a well run series of co-production forums and conferences. Read the full 2003 Report for more.

This year Sithengi promises a spectacular programme of conferences, events and other related activities, in line with the Ten Years of Freedom Celebrations in South Africa. The Market will basically have the same structure as last year and will run over 9 days. The official programme starts on the 16th pre-empted by workshops that will run from the 11th. We are planning to have a public Opening event with the opening film preceded by various South African, West African and international Artists in Concert.

Film Premieres will take place on most nights and the Cape Town World Cinema Awards will be held on the last day of the market. The Awards will be structured to include the Market Awards (Pitching prizes; Writers’ Forum Prizes, etc) and the Festival Awards.

This year the Market will include co-production forums in Feature Films, documentaries and TV programming and will be preceded by feature film, documentary and writers’ workshops and pitching forums during the year to develop projects as far as possible before the Market. The projects selected for the Documentary Co-production Forum will once again be sent on to the Forum at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam and selected Feature Film Projects will be sent on for selection at Cinemart (International Film Festival Rotterdam), the Berlin Co-production Market and IFP New York. See the Feature Film Co-production Forum; Writers’ Co-production Forum and Documentary Co-production Forum for application details and deadlines.

Sithengi is also in negotiation with the Berlin Film Festival for the establishment of the first Sithengi Talent Campus which would be modeled on the highly successful Talent Campus run at the Berlin Festival. Through the Talent Campus we hope to be able to expose filmmakers to Masters in all areas of the international film industry.

As part of Sithengi’s vision to build and nurture relations with international markets, Sithengi representatives have visited Rotterdam and Gotheborg during January, and Berlin from January to February. We will also be sending a delegation to HotDocs, Cannes and MIPTV where part of our objective would be to offer our services by facilitating meetings between South African delegates and delegates from other markets. A delegation will also be traveling to the Zanzibar Film Festival during June and July with the aim of conducting regional workshops to empower other African countries on how to use their own co-production forums to prepare projects for Sithengi.
