“A Festival of World Cinema with African film at its heart”
The Cape Town World Cinema Festival
12 – 20 November 2004
Cinema Nouveau, screened by Nedbank, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town

The Cape Town World Cinema Festival takes place from the 12th to the 20th of November at Cinema Nouveau, screened by Nedbank, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town.

Be assured that this year will be bigger and better than ever. Plans include a spectacular Opening Event on the night of Friday the 12th of November for the screening of the Premier, which will include local and international musicians, followed by the Opening Party.
This year the Festival will emphasise “films from the South” especially those from Africa but will also include Independent European and American films that fit within the World Cinema category. The Cape Town World Cinema Festival invites entries in the categories; Feature Films, Documentaries and Short Films. Last year 33 films were screened in the CTWCF of which 18 were international feature films, 11 were Southern African documentaries and 4 were South African short films.

The Competition section of the Festival will culminate in a Gala Awards Night on Friday the 19th with ongoing Red Carpet Premieres in the Main Theatre of the Artscape. Awards will be presented for the top films and filmmakers in the categories; Best Feature Film, Best Documentary and Best Short Film, with recognition awards going to Best Director, Best Writer, Best Actress and Best Actor. Categories will also include a “Proudly South African” section, a country focus on Brazil and India and films dealing with Transition.

To add luster to the occasions we are asking South African stars abroad to return and have already talked to Charlize Theron during the Berlin Film Festival with regard to her appearance at the festival.

The Festival incorporates children’s screenings, animation screenings and township screenings, taking the Cape Town World Cinema Festival to audiences in townships and communities who, due to financial constraints, would not be at liberty to travel to the screenings in the city. These initiatives form part of an ongoing audience development strategy, which Sithengi is developing along with key industry players from various communities and expertise. Other envisaged to take place in the build-up to the Festival include, include mini festivals; screenings in communities/township and at educational institutions; exhibitions; seminars, forums and touring programmes.

The aim of the Cape Town World Cinema Festival is to increase public appreciation, recognition and knowledge of local, African and other world cinema films in a bid to establish a unique South African cinema-going culture.
