Sophiatown: surviving apartheid
Reading like a VIP list to South Africa's musical history, this meticulous documentary - pulsing with the swinging beats and melodies of its subject-matter - gives us a first-hand account of the staggering creative heights and devastating political lows of the fifties.

I viewed Sophiatown at the Pan-African Film Festival in Los Angeles this past weekend. I was very excited by the energy and pace of the film.
Sophiatown was very good, both in the spirit that was invoked as well as the story that was told.
The life experiences and viewpoints of the various artists and political figures interviewed in the film really lent themselves to filling out the story. The archival footage, the excellent musical performances and the stills were well put together.
The producers should make a deal with a distributor able to give this film the same wide exposure as a comparable fim such as "Buena Vista Social Club". A soundtrack should be developed from this film so that the world can appreciate the richness of South African jazz and traditional music.
This film must be seen by a wide audience around the world. It is a compelling work.
A bullseye for me: 5 stars
