What’s up at Sithengi?

A big thank you to all our members who supported the Sithengi Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday, 24 June 2004. Following the outcome of the AGM, Sithengi has once again reinforced its status as being the premier site for the trade & development of the film, television and allied industries in South Africa and Africa.

Some of the topics discussed at the AGM included a brief summary of Sithengi’s financial results, the environment of operation, highlights of the market, challenges facing the industry as well as the future plans for the year ahead.

This year’s Festival and Market, bigger and bolder than ever before, will focus more on strengthening the projects reaching the market through the Feature Film Co-Production Forum, the Documentary Co-Production Forum and the Writers Forum. The Market promises to have increased networking functions for both the project market and the product market. It is intended to provide Master Classes on all aspects of industry with the establishment of a Talent Campus in partnership with the Berlin Film Festival.

Says CEO of Sithengi, Michael Auret: “The South African Film industry is only just at the beginning of a major growth phase and with government support for the industry increasing, we have seen a healthy growth in the numbers of local feature and television productions. This is obviously attracting much attention internationally and for this reason will lead to increased participation at the Sithengi Market.”

Some of the highlights reflected in Sithengi’s final report for the year included:

  • Sponsorship for the Sithengi Film and Television Market 2004 included the National Film and Video Foundation, the Department of Arts and Culture, the SABC, the City of Cape Town, the Provincial Government of the Western Cape and the National Lottery, though there are other numerous smaller sponsors.
  • The transitional period of Sithengi in 2003 and how it transformed itself to an organisation that is facing a more positive future financially
  • The opportunity Sithengi provided for showcasing the talents of filmmakers and developing audiences for their products
  • Changes in Sithengi’s operational structures in three core areas, namely:
    - The Sithengi Film and Television Market
    - The Cape Town World Cinema Festival
    - Sithengi’s business services
  • Positioning Africa’s premier festival by establishing a reputation for intelligent screening and hospitality where delegate networking and public access are key characteristics
