African Animation Workshop

Animators, Artists, Cartoonists and Scriptwriters are invited to apply for participation in the 5 week Africa Animated 2.0 Training and Production Workshop in Durban between June 18 and July 22, 2005. This UNESCO project is an innovative component of the Durban International Film Festival and is facilitated by the Centre for Creative Arts (University of KwaZulu-Natal).

The intensive workshop will engage fifteen selected students from countries in East and Southern Africa in the entire animation process, from script to final movie. The intention is to develop an original African approach to animation that forms the basis for an animation industry on the continent. Ultimately the initiative envisages the establishment of a regional centre for animation production and training, addressing Millenium Development Goals and targeting children as the primary audience.

The workshop will be conducted by trainers from Canada and the animation faculty of Bournemouth University (United Kingdom) in collaboration with Southern African animators.

For details about the project and application procedures interested parties can visit www.cca.ukzn.ac.za or email [email protected] or phone +27 31-260 2506 for entry details.

Experienced Animation Scriptwriters
In addition this workshop represents an opportunity for the involvement of experienced animation scriptwriters who are interested in leading a week-long workshop within the Africa Animated project. Successful applicants will be remunerated accordingly. Animation scriptwriters are invited to send CV's to: Mariana Cifuentes, Co-ordinator for Africa Animated! at the above email address.

The Durban International Film Festival runs from 15 to 26 June and its animation focus also incorporates the screening of leading animation films (including 2005 Oscar winner RYAN) and the inaugural Interface Animation Festival which presents selected work by local and international animators.

For applications please email UNESCO directly at [email protected]
